Ugandan Monarchy Mired in Bitter Succession Battle

A fierce succession conflict has engulfed the traditional Tooro kingdom in western Uganda following the death of 34-year-old King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV from cancer in the United States.

A royal clan selection committee chose the late king’s cousin, 56-year-old public broadcaster news anchor Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, as the new monarch. Elders claimed they evaluated candidates after another contender, London amateur football goalkeeper Prince George Desmond-Kamurasi, declined the role.

However, King Oyo’s immediate family firmly rejected the appointment. His sister, Princess Ruth Komuntale, denounced the announcement, stating: “My brother did leave behind an heir to the throne, and that was very clearly stated.”

The late ruler’s family insists a 2022 will designates his secretly born biological son as successor, though clan elders argue the child was never traditionally presented to qualify.

Meanwhile, Queen Mother Best Kemigisa Akiiki reported that government soldiers replaced palace guards, placing the family under house arrest. Kingdom officials urged calm ahead of the king’s burial at the Karambi royal tombs, with government mediation expected afterwards. Although Uganda’s restored traditional rulers possess no formal political power, they remain culturally significant icons.
